Homolovi State Park

Our rig

Today our travels begin. We are headed out from Aaron’s to the Homolovi State Park in Winslow Arizona. Our chance to stand on the corner in Winslow Arizona? I do believe that Cindy is excited to get going, as she is already packed up and I have not even gotten the holding tanks emptied out and cords, hoses rolled up etc. and yet she’s all set up on the inside to go. We are both excited to begin our new adventures of traveling and will add to this as we go along.

Beautiful morning drive from Chino Valley over to the Verde and then up to the rim on 260 from Camp Verde. The drive into Winslow and Homolovi State Park was cool with temps in the low 70’s and some clouds that looked like they could drop rain. Unfortunately, they didn’t do that.

Arrived at Homolovi state park at around 1:30 PM and proceeded to get set up and ready for the rest of the day. Had ourselves a quick lunch after trailer was set-up and are currently getting ready to go and see the sites.

At our campsite

A couple items of note to be aware of:

  • They close gates at 5pm so there is no vehicle access to the parking lots for viewing the sites during the cool of evening.
  • It appears that they do not take down the reserved signs for the campground sites. Verified against the Parks website.
  • Over all the campground is clean and does offer a good view of Winslow and the surrounding hills.

We got out at 8am when the rangers opened the gates and went down and toured Homolovi 1. Not much in the way of actual ruins to view but loads of pottery shards to look at. Upon returning to the parking lot got to watch a snake crossing the pavement

Our second stop was Homolovi 2. This site has a couple of partial ruins to view that were neat. Based on what can be seen it was a very large pueblo. The site has a good overlook of the Little Colorado river.
